FY2006 VOLUNTEER Opportunities



Clerical/Bookkeeping/Office Activities:
  • photocopying, collating, filing, and general office duties, including assistance in preparing for monthly Commissioner's meetings.
  • update mailing lists.
  • compile an Office Scrapbook and keep it current.
Computers:
  • design and update Web Page
  • use Geographic Information System to digitize Conservation Reserve Program and cost-share practices. 6 month commitment needed.
  • create digital library
Educational Activities:
  • conduct outdoor and indoor presentations for classes and students.
  • create exhibits and plan fair booths (Exhibits could be displayed in libraries, our front lobby, bulletin boards.)
  • staff fair booths
  • Prairie Preview preparation, set up, tear down, and booth staff.
  • Backyard Conservation (possibilities are endless.)
  • Storm Sewer Labeling
  • Envirothon: (This is an annual event involving High School students.)
Field Work:
  • complete field visits on conservation reserve program land to assess status of grass, forb, shrub, and tree plantings
  • assist with field surveys and conservation practice layout.
Grant writing:
  • write grants for conservation projects relevant to the mission of the Johnson County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Newsletter (semi-annual):
  • write articles
  • type and design layout of articles
  • printing and sorting labels
  • addressing newsletters and sorting for bulk mailing
Photography:
  • photograph events and conservation practices.
Public Relations/Marketing/Advertising:
  • publicize upcoming events
  • write about events that we sponsor, etc.
  • create news releases
  • write letters to the editor, spot announcements, etc.
  • develop and organize a press packet
  • promote adoption of conservation practices on urban and rural land

Tree, Native Plant and Prairie Seed Sale Program:

  • process orders
  • publicize sale through flyers, ads, etc.
  • distribute trees, native plants, and prairie seeds to customers

Water Quality Monitoring:

  • perform water quality monitoring tests
  • coordinate with other volunteer groups in the county to work toward a snapshot
